The Aberan Story

Aberan Angus’s third generation leader, Greg Graham, has followed in the footsteps of his grandfather’s and father’s breeding philosophy of finding, acquiring, and propagating only the finest Angus genetics in the world. We provide the highest quality care for our cattle, ensuring healthy, happy angus. Our number one priority is quality without any exceptions.

Aberan’s experiences as a long time commercial cattle operator and steward of the land have given us an array of ideas on how to improve beef cattle genetics for not only our farm but also our customers’ farms.

As we move into the future, we believe profitability in the beef business will rely on the highest quality beef, the best eating experiences, and the most environmentally friendly production standards. We have set out on a quest to produce Angus genetics that will be useful for both purebred breeders and the much larger commercial cattle industry.

After thoughtful consideration and review of the Angus industry, our staff have made a plan of action to acquire the most elite embryo donor cows and utilize embryo transfer with in vitro fertilization (ivf), sexed semen, and a large embryo recipient herd to build the foundation of our Angus program. By utilizing ivf, sexed semen and recipient cows, Aberan is able to propagate only the finest Angus genetics and make rapid genetic progress for the Angus performance traits of value and merit in a shorter period of time.

The Aberan Angus staff has already put the plan into action, with the production of 83 ivf pregnancies out of six elite embryo donor females due in the fall of 2020. We also have another sizable group of frozen embryos due in the spring of 2021. This large group of pregnancies will be the first calf crop and foundational building blocks for the future of the Aberan Angus program.

Genomic Testing

We use DNA tests to enhance predictability of current selection tools, achieving more accuracy on Expected Progeny Differences (epds) for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits that are difficult or expensive to measure.

Early Selection

100% of the current Aberan cow herd and future calf crops will be genomic tested at birth. This testing will allow us to select future embryo donor cows and herd sires at as young of an age as possible.

Constant Measurement

We collect all performance data metrics on all our calf crops: Birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights and carcass data. This performance data collection is paramount to our success and the integrity of the genomic testing.

The Future of Angus

Aberan Angus’s attention to detail, early adoption of technology, and thirst for the betterment of the Angus breed knows no limits.

We are extremely proud of our past Angus history and are overwhelmingly excited about our future breeding goals, powered by today’s scientific advances.
